Bradcat Blog
This month (more specifically Friday 10th August) marks the 50th Birthday of Spider-man. I have loved comic books from the age of seven, I’m now twenty-six. When I was younger I used to love drawing, I was pretty good for my age (if I do say so myself). It was during this phase I noticed my first comic books. The bright colours and drawing techniques caught my eye, and I admired how each artist had their own interpretation on the character’s image. At this time, I used to live in Halifax, West Yorkshire. Anyone that’s from there will tell you themselves, not a lot happens there. My brother gave me one of my first Spider-man comics. As far as I can recall, it was a 1970’s UK reprint of one of the US titles. It featured a battle with Molten Man, and all the pages were in black and white (Possibly to keep re-printing costs down). So being the artistic seven year old I was, I took a pack of crayons to the pages to make them brighter, much to my brother’s disproval. Whoops!Halifax was also home to my first comic book shop. It was in the market square and quite small. My first lot of comics were bought purely on the basis of the “pretty” front cover and included Robocop, Robocop Vs. Terminator, and Venom: Lethal Protector, to name a few.It was from here that my obsession with comic books began. I’d be at the comic book shop every week, without fail, looking for the latest issues of the stories I had been reading, and discovering new superheroes. Spider-man was the one hero I connected to the easiest, (as I’m sure most of the comic book fan world can too) bit of a loner, intelligent, and holds the one person in his family the closest. So here I am almost twenty years on, and my collection is the biggest it’s ever been. Those first few Spider-man comics I bought, are sat in a large frame on my wall. Here’s to the web slinger and all the adventures we can expect in the future!
